What is there to say, I have found that buying a new version of Norton from Amazon each year is less expensive than buying a "subscription" upgrade from Symantec itself for some reason.

While it is a bit of a "pain" to have to use the Norton Removal Tool before installing the new version, I like doing it since I end up with all the newest definitions, functions, and actaully save money doing it.

I had some trouble last year when the 2009 version also negated access to my MP3 player driver somehow, and I had a heck of a time getting everything working again. This year's version, no problem. Still Norton, still great virus protection, and an even better SONAR attack identifier included in the system.

2.) Needed 3-Users Version for Win7 Pro with XP mode

Bought Norton Anti Virus 2010 for 1 user, but should have bought the one for 3 users. I now have an HP Pavilion dv7-3065dx laptop with Win7 Pro and the WinXP mode. It appears that you need an anti virus protection on both Win7 Pro and the XP mode which are treated as two different fully functional systems. Will use Norton on the Win7 part for this year and the free Avast and Malwarebytes in the XP mode. Will see how it works out. By the way, I only have dial up and it took approximately four hours to download the updates with this Norton 2010 upon first use. I have learned from using McAfee that I will remove Norton upon it's expiration in a year and buy another disc and install rather than just allowing Norton to charge me. McAfee and Norton both charge more for existing users who renew than if you bought the disc off the shelf.

- I put the CD in, even with Norton 2009 STILL installed....the program automatically removed Norton 2009 and upgraded to the 2010 version which I was installing. This was different than some who had to use a Norton removal tool...I'm not sure why. Perhaps something to do with which older version is on your system?
- Ran live updates and was up and running in just a few minutes.
- The settings are fairly easy to adjust.
-Scanning was typical, depending on options it can take longer or a shorter time.
- Pleased overall with the product!

I have been purchasing Norton/Symantec system security and anti-virus products for more than 10 years. I recently received (for some unknown reason) a FREE upgrade to Norton AV 2010 from my older (2008 or 2009) Norton AV product. Without a doubt, Norton AV 2010 is the best of its kind I have seen. The new user interface is a substantial improvement over the old, and the features now provided are a definite cut above what was available in my previous version of Norton AV. In general, the 2010 version is more pro-active in identifying threats and dealing with them, and appears to use far fewer system resources to accomplish its tasks. I particularly like the main interface screen, which logically and comprehensively displays all the information I used to have to search for in multiple tabs in the old Norton AV program. I still continue to use a combination of Spybot S&D and Norton AV for my system security; however, I believe the combined protection I now have is a significant improvement over what I had previously. I highly recommend this product.

In June 2009 the NAV IPS function stopped working ( a minor component) due to a FireFox upgrade. It took a month for Norton to fix this partly because FireFox kept updating their versions during the same period. Norton responded by updating my NAV2009 to NAV2010 for FREE. I am using XP SP3 and have not had any viruses, or any other incidents since installing NAV2009 and the upgrade to NAV2010. I do not detect any slow down of my system. I like this product a lot and have renewed my subscription for another year. I also own Norton Ghost and back up frequently. The most important thing with antivirus software is its effectiveness, at at that Norton can't be beat. It's great at detecting and dealing with threats. The yearly renewal thing, while annoying, is a standard practice in antivirus software nowadays so this product can't really be singled out in this respect.

The reason I can't give this product 5 stars is because of its intrusive notifications. When a virus or threat is detected, a notification pops up, which is ok. But when Norton is running a background scan (which it frequently does), it pops up a notification in the bottom right hand corner of the screen, which you have to click to close (it says "Norton is running background tasks"). What bothers me most about this is that it'll pop up on top of my screensaver. Let's say your screensaver is a simple clock or animation...it's annoying to have a notice pop up right on top of it. The previous version of Norton I used would do background scans IN THE BACKGROUND without having to inform you every time. Maybe some people like these reassurances, but there is no way of turning the notifications off! It's too bad a dumb feature like this has to be part of an otherwise great program.

I bought the Norton 2010 Anti Virus because I'd had it before, last year. It is an "all in one" package that includes: antivirus, anti spyware, bot protection and browser protection. The package seems to run very quietly and can catch a majority of problems. They are fairly good about customer support up to a point.......so this is the good news.

The bad news is if you receive a new virus that they don't recognize, they won't help you and much to my amazement, they could remove the virus for an additional $99 charge! If I had to pay the full price that Notron would have me pay for this kit I would not have "bitten" due to the above practice. And so I had to buy another package to remove something they they would not do as part of their package. So if you can get this Norton 2010 for an inexpensive price, it will do a C Plus or B Minus type of job for you and you get a firewall out of it. Norton Antivirus 2010 is no panacea.

Reviewed by: Dennis G California

I've been a Norton user for years, and always liked their products. The last couple of years though I don't feel they've been up to their usual standard.

My biggest complaint is that Norton ERASED my AutoCad design program, without asking. When I looked at the activity log, Norton reported it was deleted WITH MY PERMISSION (not true) and that it was a virus. This is an old copy of AutoCad, that I've always run with Norton antivirus, and now it's a problem? Getting someone on the phone to help me work around this was a royal pain. I finally figured out that I can list the program in the Norton "exceptions" list to prevent it being deleted again, and I was able to re-install my program. Wish I could bill Norton for the lost hours of productivity.

Another problem is having to invoke the "silent mode" that is supposed to turn off Norton background activities when a "full screen" application is running. It doesn't always work, and I have to manually set it myself. On my wife's computer, if she doesn't turn manually set Silent Mode, it literally slows her computer to a crawl; it could take 2 minutes to load Outlook Express, for example.

When renewal comes up, I'm taking a hard look at the competition.

In it's favor, this latest version does make a smaller footprint, and the computer boots faster than before.

I'm giving all Norton 2009 and 2010 antivirus products a 1-star because of their "software-as-rental" policies.

I thought the 1 year subscription period meant that automatic updates would no longer be provided, but that otherwise the product would continue to work OK.

Wrong.

The software stops working and disables itself, unless you pay the yearly renewal fees, which are much higher than so-called "buying" the next year's version.

Imagine if Windows stopped working, unless you kept paying yearly fees to Microsoft, forever.

47.) Not as good as the (free) Microsoft Security Essentials

My new HP laptop (with 64-bit Vista) came with a Norton subscription. It worked for a while, then I got an error trying to update the definitions. I was relieved that the Norton support site listed the exact error description along with a remedy, but after going through their tedious procedure (to the letter) it *still* wouldn't download updates, giving me the same error message! What a HASSLE!

I uninstalled it and installed Microsoft Security Essentials, which works great! (Note: MSE *does* verify that you have a legitimate copy of Windows before it will install.) Put your credit card away! Just search for "Microsoft Security Essentials," download and install it, and you're done! It automatically updates its own definitions daily and it looks cool, to boot: a little green icon with a check-mark on the task bar assures me that all is well. It caught a Trojan from a bad website trying to install itself.

And the price is right! :^) I would have paid more for the Microsoft product but it's FREE!

48.) Non-existent Support

I have been a Norton customer for many years, but will never again purchase a Norton product. When the product suddenly stopped working, I followed the Contact Us link on the Norton website in search of the support phone number. This was only the beginning of my problem.

First of all, there is no phone number posted on the website - you must submit detailed information via an online form and only then are you provided with a phone number and "Priority ID". Next, you call the number and enter the priority ID from the previous step. Next, you go on hold and wait. And wait. And wait. In my case, I waited over 75 minutes on hold before finally giving up.

In case you decide to purchase this product, I recommend praying that you do not experience any issues, since technical support is non-existent.

This is their claim:
Although we, at Symantec, would like to be able to provide a perfect antivirus solution that can never be circumvented, unfortunately that is not possible. No antivirus software is a guarantee against a computer becoming infected with a virus. It is a preventative measure that delivers very effective protection, but is not 100% foolproof. Norton AntiVirus, and the Norton security suite products that include Norton AntiVirus (like Norton 360), offer industry leading protection against virus infections on your computer. However, the effectiveness of the protection depends on certain conditions.

I was just waiting for my service to lapse on the Norton when they automatically charged my credit card to renew. It's in the FINE print when you sign up. You have to send like 10 emails to stop the automatic re-enrollement.

In order for you to get your money back after the automatic re-enroll you must sit through 30 minutes of the most mind numbing music ever composed. It's a 100% ploy to get you off the phone to stop the cancellation. I love rap, rock, classical, and pop. No person in their right mind could possibly sit through this music without holding it away from your ear.

Hung up a few times and called on different days. Each call was no less than 30 minute wait and some calls were automatic hang ups after connection. Took me 3-4 hours on 4-5 days to get refund.

If you accidently hit OK, say goodbye to all your e-mail.

I tried even adding my e-mail folder to the scan exclusion, but apparently that feature doesn't actually work because the window still keeps coming up even with the folder excluded.

I tried contacting customer support, but they said the only supported e-mail clients are Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. Yes, I know those are Web browsers not e-mail clients, but apparently Symantec's tech support does not know the difference between e-mail and Web browsing.

Does anyone remember the old Star Trek TV series with Captain Kirk and Spock? There was an episode where they outfitted the Enterprise with a prototype computer called the M-5 that was supposed to eventually run all the starships in Starfleet and make human control obsolete. The problem was that this computer took up so much of computing resources that it would shut down other essential services on the Enterprise. Same with Norton's garbage. Takes up so much of your computing resources that you can't do anything else while it's running.

It's a lot better to get Shield Deluxe or Kaspersky Labs antivirus. These will take up minimal computing resources and provide the same amount of protection as this Norton junk. I wouldn't use Norton Antivirus if they gave it to me for free for life.

The virus kept displaying Norton's logo and Company information claiming I was running a trial and I would need to upgrade my software. This wasn't the case, I had purchased the full version from Amazon. I finally managed to get the nasty virus removed.

i haven't bought this version, but i have gotten norton antivirus before and many other "antivirus" from other companies. Anyways basically what i want to say is that the whole point of these anti virus software/program is to make your computer run faster and safe from hackers and etc. However instead of making your computer faster it slows it down by A LOT... Basically what it does is it hugs all the computer's resources which makes any programs your running slow because let's just say norton anti virus is like a airport security where everything has to be checked before they can be run on the computer to make sure whether it's safe or not. Starting your computer is going to be a pain in the butt because at start up your going to be waiting for this piece of crap to start up before you can start running your stuff. Also another thing .... every time i ran this it kept saying i had a virus? I mean shouldn't it take all the virus out in one scan? I mean i gurantee you it will say you have a virus every time you do a scan .... I mean shouldn't it take all the virus and whatever in first scan? Why do i have to scan it friggin million times? Or are they scamming you to make you keep using their garbage software? Also Beware they will "FEAR" you into buying their worthless product by saying your computer is going to get infected and blah blah blah if you don't buy their newest version or whatever. But honestly if you guys have a computer that is infected with virus your better off just backing up your files and resetting the computer to factory settings. I have been doing fine not using these anti virus garbage for like three years my laptop has been running fine.

Reviewed by: Daniel W. Peer San Antonio, TX

Let me start by saying; I do technical support for a living. There are 2 things you need to understand about anti-virus software that I have to explain on a daily basis:

1. It's not perfect. NO ONE makes a perfect anti-virus. NO ONE. Why not, you ask? Because there is a guy in Romania making a new virus as you read this and no one can think of every possibility, let alone know what that guy is cooking up. If it could be done, Microsoft would have these guys on the payroll. No one can protect you from every type of virus that has been or may be conceived. It's impossible.

2. If you don't keep your subscription current, you need to uninstall the software to actually use the internet. This means that if you barely know how to turn on your computer, this will hold your computer hostage. Yes, they hold your computer hostage for ransom to the amount of a new account subscription.

If you know what not to download and what is OK to download, you don't need Anti-virus software. If you have no idea what an "Active X control" is, then you really have no way of knowing if you should allow it to function or even download it in the first place. Because of those two facts, you don't need Anti-Virus software at all.

However, you might want this if you download from illegal bit torrents. You know, pirated software? People who make viruses prey on people who steal via torrent sites, so by all means, get some protection if you do that sort of thing. At least you can pay someone for their honest work.
