1.) Logitech's Flagship Keyboard and Mouse Combo
Reviewed by: A Music Fan San Jose, CA
Rating:
I got the Logitech Cordless Desktop MX 5500 Revolution to replace my Dell Bluetooth Keyboard-Mouse Combo, which I strongly advise you to steer clear of.

The Logitech Cordless Desktop MX 5500 Revolution comprises the MX Revolution mouse and the MX 5500 keyboard. I have evaluated each unit individually (under the headers, MX REVOLUTION MOUSE, and MX 5500 KEYBOARD) and in combination (under the header MOUSE & KEYBOARD).

>> MX REVOLUTION MOUSE <<

- Function
The MX Revolution has, of course, the usual controls on a mid-range to high-end mouse: forward button, back button, and scroll-wheel. The scroll-wheel is clickable and can be rocked from side to side (default function: horizontal scrolling). In addition, there is another button located right behind the scroll-wheel (default function: Internet search). The mouse also has a thumb-wheel (default function: Document Flip). What sets this mouse apart is its much-hyped hyper scrolling feature.

- Hyper Scrolling
I didn't understand what all the fuss over this Hyper Scrolling business was about, but after I saw it in action - boy, was I impressed. The Hyper Scrolling feature is used thus:

1. A quick flick of the wheel in either direction sets the wheel spinning like a flywheel, and correspondingly, sends a scroll bar moving very rapidly in the designated direction - a useful feature for speeding through those arduously long Web pages or documents with ease.

2. For regular scrolling, turn the wheel as you would normally. The wheel actually responds with feedback so the user feels each notch as the wheel is turned ("click-to-click" mode). What's amazing is the feel of the wheel is indistinguishable from that of a regular mouse.

3. The wheel can also be set (using the SetPoint application) to scroll smoothly ("free spin" mode). A smart electronic mechanism in the mouse controls whether the scroll-wheel is in "click-to-click" or "free spin" mode. Nifty!

4. Hyper Scrolling can be disabled with the SetPoint application if you choose not to use it.

- Tracking
The MX Revolution uses a laser for tracking instead of an optical sensor that picks up images taken by a built-in camera. The primary advantage of laser over optical mice is that laser mice can track on any surface. This mouse took on surfaces that my optical mice had trouble tracking - with no problems. The tracking resolution is 800 dpi, which some people find to be slightly low. I find that it provides very smooth and accurate tracking regardless.

- Customization
For whatever reason, Logitech decides that you should have complete customization on all the buttons except one, namely, the thumb wheel located on the side of the mouse. For this button, you're limited to the following choices: Document Flip, Zoom, Volume, Media, Thumb Scroll, and keystrokes customization for each of the forward, back, and wheel-click motions of the thumb-wheel.

- Power Consumption
A full charge of the mouse usually lasts me about 6-7 days with heavy use (8 or more hours a day). The mouse fully charges in about 2 hours. The battery indicator in the Logitech SetPoint software shows the battery level in terms of "days" and "percentage" of remaining power. When the mouse is fully charged, the indicator always shows "9 days" and "100%" in remaining battery power. I reckon with moderate use, the battery indicator should be a fairly accurate gauge.

- Ergonomics
The MX Revolution continues the tradition of Logitech's line of exceptionally well-designed and ergonomic mice. The placement of the scroll-wheel, the thumb-wheel, and all buttons are perfect for me as they are within comfortable reach of my fingers. The mouse is ergonomically shaped and fits very comfortably in my hand (I have average-sized hands). Last, I should also mention that this mouse is designed for right-handed use only. Sorry, lefties.

>> MX 5500 KEYBOARD <<

- Size
The keyboard has a sizable footprint. The dimensions are approximately 18.5" x 9" x 1.5" (Length x Width x Height measured at the widest points). The wrist rest is, unfortunately, not detachable.

- Weight
The keyboard isn't what I would call light, but it's not intolerably heavy either. In terms of the ease of portability, I wish it was just a tad lighter. On the other hand, its moderate weight also helps to keep it securely weighted down on its rubber feet so it doesn't slide around while you're typing.

- Ergonomics
The wrist-rest helps a little with fatigue. Its has a rubberized texture and has a nice soft feel to it. The tactile feel of the keys is more like that on a "regular" keyboard rather than on a laptop keyboard. The keyboard is fairly quiet when in operation.

- Power Consumption
The keyboard uses 4 AA batteries. The battery life is pretty decent. I've owned the combo set for 2 months now and I'm still on the same set of batteries (I'm using 2400 mAh rechargeables). At this point, the battery indicator on the Logitech SetPoint application says it has 30 days' worth of battery life left.

>> MOUSE & KEYBOARD <<

- Connectivity
The keyboard and mouse both use Bluetooth wireless technology. I was able to set them up very quickly and easily - without a hitch. The Bluetooth connectivity has proven to be extremely reliable. Neither the keyboard nor mouse has lost connectivity since I had them set up - not once - a pleasant surprise, considering my old Dell bluetooth combo dropped out of connection several times a day. The wireless range is equally amazing. I tested the Bluetooth connection by bringing the keyboard and mouse to a room adjacent to the one my computer was housed, and lo and behold, both the keyboard and mouse worked!

- Response
I am unable to perceive any lag in the responses of both the mouse and keyboard. Even after the units have gone to sleep after a period of inactivity, it takes no time, or at most a split second, to wake up and respond to any keystrokes or mouse movements.

>> Conclusion

The keyboard is more on the large side for me (larger keyboards seem to be the norm now). Otherwise, it is top-notch and one of the best keyboards I've ever used. The mouse earns high marks for its ergonomics, styling, performance, and innovative hyper-scrolling feature - It's the best mouse I have ever used, and I've run through quite a few from Logitech. Overall, the desktop set has performed exceptionally well and I have never encountered any quirks or annoyances. I don't think you can go wrong with this one!

2.) Best keyboard and mouse I have ever used.

About 9 months ago I bought a large LCD screen TV for my living room and hooked up my computer from the next room to it. So I needed a keyboard and mouse to control the computer from the living room, about 25 feet away with a wall in between. I needed a bluetooth keyboard & mouse combo and purchased the Logitech MX5000. Eventhough it worked, it had a lot flaws. It would often disconnect. Mouse would jump all over the place. Keys would repeat itself. I looked around for alternatives, but could not find anything until recently.

Logitech 5500 looks almost identical to the previous model, but with substantial improvements. I do not have any of the problems I encountered with the MX5000. Keyboard and mouse have a very good feel to it. I am very pleased with this model, I highly reccomend this MX5500 to everyone.

3.) Its even compatible with the PS3!
Reviewed by: A. Womack Lumberton, NJ

There have been questions out there on whether this keyboard is compatible with the PS3. I just purchased the MX 5500 today and to answer to that question, I am pleased to announce that it is! At first I was going to buy the diNovo Mini, because they actually advertise it as being compatible with the PS3 and I liked the size of it. However, today while browsing through my base exhange store, I noticed the MX 5500 on display and decided to purchase it. Now the only way I was going to keep it, depended on the PS3 compatibility. Had it not been, I would have returned it the next day. Thankfully, that won't be necessary as I am typing this with it at this moment. Now it takes a little time to pair, but it will pair up. In your PS3 settings where you register your bluetooth devices, select scan, then press the red button under the bottom of the keyboard to connect the device. Within three seconds, the PS3 will recognize the device. Here's where it gets tricky. It will ask you to enter a six-digit code using the actual device. The first several times I tried, the PS3 stated that no connection was made and to try again. So I kept trying until it finally paired up. Then you do the same with the mouse. When promted to enter another device, just press the red button underneath the mouse.

Much to my surprise,I learned that not only does it work with text, it also controls the home UI as well! You can scroll through all the icons on the home screen using the mouse and or keyboard. You can also control the funtions within the icons, such as select, play, stop, options, etc. The way I found out was just pressing buttons just to see what would happen. So far, I am very please with this product.

4.) Excellent product, excellent support, beware of ZoneAlarm
Reviewed by: Peter Afonin Bellevue, WA United States
Rating:
I own this product for three months, and found it excellent. It has many nice features, very reliable. It doesn't have any interference (unlike my previus Logitech mouse and keyboard) with the other devices, although it's plugged in in the back of my computer, quite far away from keyboard. The keys are very soft.

But first I had a problem. As soon as I installed MX 5500, the keyboard and mouse started to work immediately, but not as they should. The keyboard didn't display the date and time, and the program interface was missing some tabs, including My Mouse and My Keyboard.

So I contacted techsupport by e-mail. They responded quickly and tried to help, but nothing worked. Finally I called them (I was on hold for only couple of minutes), and they said that it was probably a defective product and sent me a new one, without even asking me to return mine!

The new one had the same issue. So I decided to use it the way it was, since in general everything worked, I just couldn't configure it and there was no date and time on the screen.

But recently I found out that there was nothing wrong with the product. The problem was with ZoneAlarm Security suite that I have installed on my computer. Although I was disabling it (as well as the other startup programs) when I was installing the software, it wasn't good enough. The latest update for ZoneAlarm Security Suite (7.1.254.000 for Vista) had been released mainly to fix incompatibility with the Logitech products. As soon as I installed it - the problem immediately disappeared.

So I'm very pleased with this product and Logitech support. But if you have ZoneAlarm - be sure to update it to the latest version.

5.) Amazing Combo from Logitech
Reviewed by: tech guru Wyoming
Rating:
Before owning this keyboard and mouse combo I had the older MX 3100 which I was really impressed with and lasted me a good 3-4 years of heavy use, but the batteries just don't hold the charge they used to. So when looking for a new keyboard Logitech was again a logical choice with their track record of reliable products, and I must say that this MX 5500 set is superior in every aspect to anything I've ever used.

Keyboard:
The hardware feels really solidly built, and looks very sleek, while also being very comfortable to use. I liked the idea of a screen on the keyboard that would constantly display the date & time, give e-mail alerts, show media information, and even show the room temperature, but was sceptical after reading many reviews saying that it was hard to see. Maybe it has something to do with lighting, but I have to say, I have no trouble reading the display at all. I have tested the display playing media in both Winamp and Windows Media Player; both worked flawlessly without any effort on my part. When the calculator button on the keyboard is pressed, the display shows the results of whatever operation you have computed, so you don't have to open the windows calculator and deal with another window, which is really conveinient. The keyboard's keys are also really soft and barely make any noise when typing which I really like. The built on palm rest is also a welcome addition, and has a rubbery texture to it that feels nice to the touch. The keyboard's media keys and other shortcut keys are really well integrated into the keyboard design, and are not huge and gaudy annoyances. The old MX 3100 set essentially had exactly the same key layout as this MX 5500 set, and I really preffer the bigger delete key and half-sized F keys that also serve as shortcuts to office programs etc.. I do not miss the NUM lock or Scroll lock keys which have been integrated into the setpoint software instead of receiving their own dedicated keys. I also like the fact that the keyboard shortcuts are written on the front of the keys such as copy, paste, open, find, etc... The battery life for the keyboard also seems to be exceptional, as I've used it for a few weeks and the counter in the setpoint software which tells you how many more days the battery is good for has only reduced by 2 or 3 days. With my old set I only had to replace the batteries in the keyboard once in 3 years, so this really should not be a concern for going wireless. Also, Amazon seems to have given the dimensions of the product box in the product information which can be misleading. I was worried that the screen's added height wouldn't allow the keyboard to fit in my pullout tray, but it fits fine. The actual keyboard dimensions are 19"x9.25"x2.38" (LxWxH). Overall the keyboard is very functional and has a really good feel of quality and durability.

Mouse:
The mouse is also an excellent piece of hardware and is very comfortable in your hand, assuming you are right handed :) It seems to track perfectly on every surface I have tried, and the fast scrolling wheel is a really neat and useful feature. I am still experiemnting with it, but the wheel can either react in the traditional manner or set to a free spin mode. However it seems to have a hard time staying engauged in free spin mode for me. Clicking the wheel down re-engauges the free spin mode again, but Logitech may need to perfect this a little more in the future. Again the mouse, like the keyboard, also seems to be really well built and the thumb rest area also has the same rubbery texture that the palm rest of the keyboard has, which is a nice addition. The upper edge also has forward and back button, easilly reachable with your thumb, for ease of browsing the web. The second wheel on the side of the mouse doesn't turn fully; it rotates about 45 degrees forward or back to switch between windows, and clicks inward to make a window selection. This works well and gives the mouse a unique look while also being very functional. One of my main qualifications for a new wireless keyboard and mouse combo was a rechargeable mouse, and the MX 5500 is the only Logitech product to include one. Batteries are just an annoyance I would rather not buy and deal with. The rechargeable battery seems to be holding a charge vey well and has only worn down one of it's three bars on the meter displayed on the mouse after a few weeks of use. The Bluetooth has worked flawlessly for both the mouse and keyboard. Both devices were automatically connected as soon as I plugged in the Bluetooth USB receiver, even without the SetPoint software being installed. I haven't had to mess with them at all since. Everything just works the way it should the first time which is great; cudos to Logitech!

SetPoint Software:
The setpoint software gives you the ability to change the basic tasks of the buttons on the keyboard and mouse along with other various common settings you would expect for a mouse and keyboard. Not too bloated, but yet it gives you the control of the things you need control of. While the keyboard and mouse will work without the software, some of the shortcut keys and keyboard display require it to function correctly, which is really no big deal and is to be expected. Installation of the software went really smooth and I just used the latest software off Logitech's website instead of the CD. I had everything installed and fully functional within ten minutes or so. It also had no problem handling having both my old MX 3100 set along with me new MX 5500 connected at one time, while allowing for customization of each. I really have no complaints about it!

Bottom line:
The MX 5500 is a really solidly built, sleek, and quality set that you shouldn't hesitate to buy. While the price may be a little high it has a reassuring 3 year warranty and will probably last longer than that anyways. You get what you pay for! With wireless in particular, a quality product that is reliable and doesn't require you to mess with all the time because the connection keeps dropping or because of other issues other issues is worth the price. It just works...exceptionally well!!!

The programmable keys and buttons allow the user to set this pair up for very efficient use. I am very pleased with the set.

Super-fast response time. Low-noise keyboard. Best-ever shaped mouse with every possible function. Bought this to replace Logitech's top-end model from 5 year's ago. I was disappointed that I needed to get a new one because I wasn't sure I would get to keep all the functions. But this model has even more to offer. The mouse fits the hand perfectly and holds its charge for longer than I can sit in front of a computer... and it stills works the next day when the kids leave it out of the charger overnight. And Bluetooth is always worth the extra money.
My only complaint is that the letters on the keyboard are in an unusual font which confuses my aged eyeballs sometimes.

9.) Very, very nice.
Reviewed by: Electromotive Force Tampa, FL USA

I got the MX5500 combo as an upgrade from a Microsoft Desktop Elite + separate MX5000 mouse. That custom combo really worked well for me...and now this!

Pros:
The Setpoint software (the latest edition) really shines. The customization with the mouse and/or keyboard has improved. THe kayboard has great features, like the multimedia keys, the LCD, and of course its sylish looks. Some people will disagree, but I think the muffled response of the keys is easy on the ears and the tactile response is very reassuring (no side-to-side wiggle of the keys is noticeable). It's really just personal opinion from one user to another, but I really love the feel of the keys.

The mouse...I don't know if there is any real bad attribute to speak of here. It charges insanely fast, it's stylish, it's highly functional and customizable through the software, the top scrolling wheel it simply awesome (if you don't know about the MX 5500 scrolling wheel, you need to google it, son), it's egronomic too.

Cons:
For the keyboard, it would be nice to have a backlight for the LCD to actually make use of it at night; otherwise, you'd better turn a light on in the room or something. The wrist pad easily shows palm moisture, but that's not too big a deal as it usually evaporates or you can just clean it off. As others have mentioned, I wish the keyboard had a power on/off switch to save batteries. And yes, keep a wired keyboard handy for those times you have to go into BIOS or something. Amazingly, that's about it.

For the mouse: Only fault I have is the side wheel kind of throws off the feel you have of the mouse. As comfortable as the mouse if to hold, I'm always wary about activating that side wheel, as it is an application switcher. I've actually grown into it though and it's not a real problem anymore.

Overall: I give this a 9/10. It's well worth it, especially now that prices are coming down for this particular setup. I got mine for a cool $85.00!

10.) A Surprisingly Good Package

I have rarely been as impressed with anything as much as I have been with this keyboard and mouse. It simply works extremely well. I would have been perfectly satisfied without the extra bells and whistles (like the LCD and various add on buttons) because it does what it is supposed to do so well. I bought it to use with my living room PC which is the heart of an entertainment system. The PC (a Dell Dimension 9200) is in a cabinet behind a glass door and the blue tooth dongle is plugged into the back of the PC. Both the keyboard (which has the feel of a good notebook keyboard) and laser mouse work perfectly. I even took the keyboard into my bedroom which is very close to the 30 foot maximum range. While I couldn't see the TV I had no trouble at all typing stuff in. The mouse is also far and away the best laser mouse I have ever owned. Other mice that I've used were pretty finicky as to what kind of surface you moused on, but this one works with any imaginable surface including a rug, a sofa, my leg and even the palm of my hand! All in all, I'd say this is a very impressive package. One comment on the edit key arrangements, so far I have not had any problem adjusting to it. The large Delete key is easy for me to hit and I'm happy the Insert key (which I frequently have pressed by mistake) has been moved out of the way. As an extra bonus, they allow you to disable certain annoying keys such as the hated and totally useless Caps Lock key... What could be better? I'm totally satisfied.

Between work and home I use and demo about a dozen keyboards or mice a year. Have always wanted an efficient and functional cordless combo. The Logitech Cordless MX 5500 Revolution is by far the best I have found to date. Great functionality, hot keys, wireless/bluetooth connectivity, and a few bonus fun features. Would love if they could transition to no battery replacements for the keyboard (charge like the mouse somehow) - but still a great accessory package.

15.) No stalling
Reviewed by: abw USA

I had the MX 5000 and the mouse kept freezing up all the time. I could not go through a whole day without it happening at least once. And the power saver thing with the keyboard was just annoying. I got used to just hitting a key before starting to write, to sort of wake up the keyboard, BUT a lot of times it would just get stuck as if a key was being held down, and I would get something like this ttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt. VERY frustrating.

BUT, I have had NO problems with this one, the MX 5500 revolution. I love it. No stalling, no freezing, no double letters. Beautiful. :)

The one thing that I do miss from the 5000 is that you could see the temperature on the main screen on the display on the keyboard, the 5500 displays time and date. And it is also a little dark, I would have liked to have some backlight on it. But getting rid of that stupid mouse issue with the 5000 is worth almost anything...hehe

The 5500 mouse is also a little smaller. Maybe more normal size. The 5000 mouse was a little too big for my liking.

The only complaint I guess I have about the 5500 is the new smart scroll thing, where it switches between free scroll and clicking scroll. I hate it. But, you can customize it with the Set Point software and have the scroll behave the way you want it to.

So if you have, or have had the 5000, and want to buy the new one, but are wondering if the 5500 still has the mouse or keyboard issues, it does not, so buy it and get back to a properly functioning mouse again. :)

My concern about the keyboard was the touch. I have RSI and some pain in my hands. I've tried several keyboards that literally made my fingers numb and had to return them.

The logitech keyboard is one of the best I've ever used and has a very soft touch. I like the date and time feature and the single function, programmable keys. It's very hand to pull up a frequently used Word document file with one touch on the keyboard; ditto for several favorite websites, mail and photo files. Also, the delete key is long, well positioned and very easy to hit.

I am very happy with the keyboard/mouse combo and would highly recommend it. I have a second Logitech MX Rev mouse (travel/back up) and when the charger died recently I called and they replaced it within days. Turns out these have a 5 year waranty. A somewhat more compact layout than the conventional keyboards, but not difficult becoming accustomed to it. Very customizable, but if your memory is as short as mine, you will need a cheat sheet to remember where/what you programmed. Have had this unit in use nearly a month now and the battery still indicates 'full.'(requires 4 alkaline batteries, included) The revolution wireless mouse that comes with the unit is excellent, tracks precisely, with no lag, and also has programmable buttons and wheels. Two small nits to pick: 1) Like most keyboards, the plastic elevating feet are small and suspect in their survivability. Would like to see something more robust with at least a modicum of height adjustment selection. Mine are still intact, but did read one report that had a foot broken on receipt of the unit. 2) The palm rest, while probably an excellent fit for some women's hands, is a little short for most man-sized hands; however, the more I use the keyboard the less this appears a problem. Bottom line reads that this is an excellently constructed unit, easy to use, and NOT over-priced when you compare it to other wireless units! NOTE: Supplied with blue tooth connection device - NOT necessary to buy, as I did after reading about someone having blue tooth connectivity issues, a blue tooth adapter!

I bought this wireless keyboard/mouse combo for my husband because the Microsoft wireless combo that came with our computer was useless. He wanted to be able to check his email, pay bills and surf the internet in the living room while sitting on the couch and the original combo had serious lag and connection issues. I spent several hours reading reviews on Amazon for different wireless combo sets and decided on this one. It works perfectly! We've had it for over a month and are completely satisfied. I haven't noticed any lag with either the keyboard or the mouse. The keyboard does not have to be in a direct line with the computer to work which is nice if you're lying on the couch or have your feet on the coffee table. The mouse is excellent, we use it on the coffee table without a mouse pad and it even works on the cushions of the couch. I would definitely buy this set again and recommend it to anyone looking for a good wireless keyboard/mouse set. Wonderful!

Finally I can type without a delay and what I type will appear right away. Always missed the first letter to what I typed. NOT ANYMORE!

Bluetooth on this model at least is reliable and I recomend this to others now. Way to go logitech.

My only dislike is that the keyboard has a calculator button that uses the display on the keyboard as the calculator, not the Windows calculator. It should have been made customizable to the OS Calculator.

As with most other Logitech products, this one is top notch. It should be for the price. Nice feeling keyboard, like a laptop, and very comfortable mouse. Recharge is better than batteries. Charge on the mouse lasts only about a week if you use the computer most of the day, 5 days a week. As another reviewer mention, they moved the insert button, thank you, I always hit it by mistake and never need it.

I don't use a lot of the extra features on the keyboard, but it's got all the bells and whistles. Tells you the temperature on your keyboard tray, that's important.

I bought this set about a month ago mainly for the keyboard which I use with an MX Air in a home theater setup. Typing is very smooth and relatively quiet. The media buttons are useful but as others have mentioned, the volume control from the keyboard should be more sensitive as the volume on the LCD does not match the master volume. The USB receiver that comes with the set makes for a quick setup but isn't necessary if you have bluetooth built into your computer with no loss in functionality (works well with PS3 too). I like having the calculator built right into the keyboard as it allows me to use it when the computer is off. I find the LCD screen useful for controlling music when a visualizer is on or the TV is off. The thermometer is a strange feature but I do check it every so often. The key counter is really useless but again, I'm still compelled to take a look. I use this keyboard regularly from about 15ft out and only experience a 1-2 second delay on start-up. One feature I could really use would be a backlight for the LCD. Battery life on 4 AA batteries is still at 181 days after 5+ hours of use for a month.

When purchasing this set I intended to sell the Mx Revolution mouse to a friend but I'm now glad he backed out. I've never experienced a more comfortable and functional mouse (the MX Air doesn't even come close when used on a surface) The mass and precision feel just right for office as well as gaming applications. The unique scrolling feature is perfect for managing large documents or code. It takes some getting use to but it lets you fly through pages and then return to normal for fine scrolling to that line you need. There are plenty of configuration options that I don't have much use for, but its nice to know my mouse can adapt if I need to.

There are a number of functions on the mouse and some can be programmed to your liking with the supplied software.

The keyboard is also wireless bluetooth and has a good feel while typing. There are numerous functions on it that I haven't even touch the surface with them yet. The only disappointment is that the LCD display is NOT backlit and is nearly impossible to read in low light.

I figure anything in electronics with a 5 year warrantee is worth $140 . I have to have a good keyboard and mouse . I use mine allot . I always have at least one backup . My first cordless started to act up . I believe the mouse just needed a new battery pack but they are expensive . I just stuck two AA batteries in it and it worked but to be safe I decided to purchase new and get rid of the old track ball bottom backup and corded keyboard .

I read everything on this . One main complaint is the lack of a number lock . There are only 4 programable favorite keys that set just like a radio . Calculator is only on the LCD screen which is very hard to see in most lighting conditions . Its ok but they could of done better . There are no lit keys . I do hit the document flip allot . You can hit the computer on off button but its rare .

However all the key shortcomings are made up for by the mouse if you maximize your learning curve for it . The key rest and stroke are wonderful . I love the feel of this board . The size is nice a tad more compact then my old 910 . The volume control doesnt show the green bar but it works . This takes some getting used too . This is a very nice unit . If you can afford to spend this kind of money without a problem its the one you want . I did not get 30 feet but I did get this to work 20 through a wall just testing it in my 800 sq foot home .

What I like about it the most is the size . This is perfect for sitting on my lap . Its smaller then my old 910 . I am pleased and it will take time to get used to it . I will update in 6 months or so . I doubt I will be disapointed . The mouse is unbelievable . It has so many bells and whistles all programable . I did do what others said and went right to logitech and downloaded the latest set point softward its 4.72 right now . I didnt even use the install disk . I saw when I put in set point it also conected and updated the bluetooth hub . That is so nice smaller then a flash drive . This is perfect to be used in the house as a media / laptop saver / server or desktop universal unit . I just can't say enough good things about it . If your a student on a budget get the 110 for $30 it will work fine . Again if you wont sweat the price this is nice . Its the old deal that 10 year battery $30 timex is a great watch nobody needs more but its nice to own a automatic Rolex too . This has come down in price enough to be considerred a reasonable purchase in my mind . You may do better with the wave for strickly business applications but this is wonderful for home use . The blue tooth is not making a single mistake for me and I put the hub in the back of my desktop .

Now off to figure out how I can use the hub with my other bluetooth devices . God Bless I am happy to me this package was worth the extra money . This mouse and the document flip features even though I hit it all the time are worth the $$$ . For the poeple that hate how this doesnt use windows calculator just open it then use doc flip . Read through the 77 reviews you will get some very good tips on how to modify this to make it better . People are wonderful about helping others here on Amazon . God Bless .

I was hesitant to spend so much on a keyboard and mouse. Initially I took a trip to wal-mart and picked up a $30 wireless combo. Never again. The keyboard on the mx 5500 is a pleasure to type on. My girlfriend scoffed at the keyboard display (why not make one without it???) but after 5 minutes typing she asked me to get her one. The mouse is a perfect fit, and accurate. Get a mousepad with wrist support. The wireless features are great, adjusting volume, pausing audio, all from the comfort of my bed yards away from the computer.

One of the features not mentioned enough is the actual bluetooth receiver for the combo. Once enabled, it communicates seamlessly with other bluetooth devices, in my case a blackberry, laptop, and headset. I'm working on moving to the MX 5500 combo on every computer I use. It's next to impossible going from the combo at home to a normal keyboard and mouse at work.

This is what a keyboard and mouse should be.

I have a laptop that I can connect to my 32" TV. I was looking to take advantage of this larger screen and get away from my desk chair. I was a bit hesitant about paying this much for a keyboard and mouse, but I wanted something that used Bluetooth. I'm very glad I went with this set. It really is top notch kit made for Vista.

First, the build quality of both the keyboard and mouse is excellent. The keyboard is light, and the mouse has a nice weight to it. The keyboard is very comfortable, and the keys are incredibly responsive and extremely quiet.

The keyboard is loaded with great features. The F1-F12 keys all have secondary functions, activated by a Fn key located between the right Alt and Ctrl. Touching two keys, you can open Word, Excel, PowerPoint, a browser, mail, and many other useful programs. There are three buttons on the bottom right of the keyboard, Media Center, Photo Gallery, and Gadgets, that I find very handy. I programmed the Media Center to open iTunes, and, in conjunction with the sound an volume controls on the left of the keyboard, I can easily control my music. When music plays, track information appears in the keyboard LCD. The Gadgets button brings all of Vista's gadgets to the front of your screen, which actually makes them useful. The left of the board also contains the 3D flip and zoom button, making switching programs easy. Zoom is very useful for viewing webpages from far away on the TV. The LCD displays the time and date, music, temperature, options to access the control panel or documents, a key counter, and an inbox. The temperature appears to be from a sensor somewhere on the keyboard, which really isn't useful. The delete key is moved down slightly from where I am accustomed to it being. I also wish the Inbox could be configured to work with Gmail, but these are minor issues. My favorite feature of the keyboard is the built-in calculator. Press one button and the keypad becomes a calculator, with results showing up in the LCD. There is also an option to save the result on the computer's clipboard.

The mouse is solid and performs well. I wouldn't recommend it for online FPS use, but no wireless mouse is great for that. All of the buttons on the mouse are incredibly programmable, and the software works great. The scroll wheel defaults to click, but, if spun fast, goes into free-wheel mode, which is actually very useful for scrolling through very long documents. The second wheel on the side of the mouse feels slightly awkward, but all in all, it's a great mouse. I configure the side buttons to go forward/back, which makes web surfing and music navigation a snap.

The battery life of both products is great. There is no way to turn the keyboard off, but it's not really needed, as 4 AA's last for 180 days. The mouse includes a recharging dock, but it easily goes for two weeks if you don't turn it off overnight.

I really like the fact that both devices connected to my computer's internal bluetooth. The dongle that is included connects very quickly, but moving the mouse and pressing a few keys on the keyboard is all it takes to reactivate the devices.

I haven't had an issue with range. I haven't been able to go far enough away from my computer that either of the devices stop working. I could get about 20 feet before I couldn't see my screen anymore. There should be few situations in which the range won't be long enough.

The software is nice, and allows customization of almost all of the buttons. I wish you could customize the LCD, but it's not a major concern. The software works perfectly on 64-bit Vista. It should be noted that you can't use the keyboard while booting the computer, but that's not an issue for me.

I think this set was worth everything I paid for it. I recommend it highly.

Battery life is great, we've been using the keyboard heavily (the HTPC is used for all of our TV watching and regular computing needs) for over a month now and it's showing no signs of slowing down. The LCD on the keyboard has some really nifty features. It shows the track information in media center or media player. It shows the computer time and has an onboard thermometer to show the current room temperature. The calculator function is also neat. The keyboard functions as a stand alone calculator, it doesn't just open the windows calculator on the PC. There are great HTPC buttons on the keyboard so you can zoom, adjust the volume, and change the active windows without any effort. You can also reassign all the keys and the scroll wheels on the mouse.

And I did not have to install my spare's software to make it work; it works automatically with the Keyboard's software. I love the clock on the keyboard although it would be nice if it lit up. Hopefully Logitech will come up with a backlit keyboard that lights up and turns on when someone passes within so many feet of it.

I didn't let those people who sent in bad reviews deter me from purchasing this product. They expect perfect right out of the box. I have had no problems with this product or any Logitech product I have purchased through the years. I wish those "Sour Grapes" people would just send back their prchase and keep their mouths shut. Logitech puts out good products...if you don't like Logitech, then refrain from purchasing their products.

The only problem I had was after a large Vista update. The keyboard quit connecting. So finally I re-installed the Logitech software, and it's been working fine. So I think the problem is more with Vista than Logitech. I've had this keyboard/mouse for a month, and so far works flawlessly. It's so nice not to have to worry about line-of-sight infrared receiving that older wireless technology required.

76.) Bluetooth Bundle - Logitech May Have Done It Right This Time!
Reviewed by: M. Pickering MI, USA

I have been a fan of Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse combos for several years, and have owned nearly every new model they have come out with. My family has three computers, and all of them get used several hours a day, so I replace they keyboards and mice quite regularly. Logitech has always impressed me with their RF combo models, which have a great range and an extremely reliable signal. However, recently Logitech started dabbling with Bluetooth, and I have been disappointed with them for doing so. When the MX 5000 desktop combo was first released, I was quick to snag one immediately. It took me over two hours, and several reinstallations of the SetPoint software in order to get the combo to work. I encountered similar frustrations when I purchased the diNovo Laser combo for my wife's PC. Both of these keyboard/mouse combos use Bluetooth wireless to communicate with the PC, and both have proven to be extremely unreliable and frustrating to use. Many of the problems involved keystrokes not being recognized, sluggish mouse response, or even one of the devices losing connection entirely; requiring device reset or a complete reboot of the computer. I recently replaced both the MX 5000 and diNovo combos with Logitech's RF model MX 3200, which works flawlessly, and I swore that I would never buy a Bluetooth wireless desktop combo from Logitech again. Well, when I saw that Logitech was releasing a combo that offered the MX Revolution mouse, I just had to have it. You can imagine how disappointed I was to see that Logitech had decided to make this a Bluetooth set. Why would they do this? After all of the problems people have had with recent Bluetooth models, and all of the complaints that have been posted all over the net, I Should think that Logitech would have learned their lesson! Yet I had hope that maybe Logitech had learned from their mistakes and had improved the design and communication of this new model. I decided to order the MX 5500, as soon as it was released, and I have been using mine for the past few days. So far I am VERY impressed.

Installing the MX 5500 system was far better than my previous experience with Logitech Bluetooth combos. As recommended by Logitech, I first uninstalled my previous SetPoint installation and rebooted the computer. I still found that I had to use my MX 3200 keyboard and mouse to let logged into my computer, as Windows had still not detected the new Bluetooth dongle (included with the MX 5500) I had inserted into a USB port. Once I was logged into my Windows account it popped up a message saying that new hardware had been detected. Windows first sees it as a USB hub, and soon installs a two new HID devices, one for the keyboard and one for the mouse. I was then able to remove my 2.4GHz RF dongle for the MX 3200 combo, and my new MX 5500 was working just fine. This is BEFORE I reinstalled the SetPoint software! Logitech has found a way to pair the MX 5500 devices at the factory, to make it easier to install your new devices. This improvement alone won some big points with me. I then proceeded to install the included SetPoint 4.24 software, included with the MX 5500 combo. Installation was a breeze and a Bluetooth Connection Assistant soon popped up on the screen. It showed that the MX Revolution mouse was connected but that the keyboard was not. As the Connection Assistant suggested, I pushed the little red "Connect" button, located on the bottom of the keyboard, and was soon prompted to enter a 4-digit PIN number from the keyboard. After completing these simple steps my keyboard was successfully connected, and both the keyboard and mouse have remained connected every since.

I spent some time customizing the features of my new MX 5500, which can take a while since there are so many possibilities with this combo. The so-called backlit 2.95- x .79-inch LCD on the keyboard is very nice. This display can be toggled to several different modes, including time/date, media (shows artist name, song title, and progress bar), temperature, ABCD "favorites" key assignments, key counter, and e-mail inbox. Very impressive is the fact that the LCD updates quite quickly, when you receive a new e-mail or start playing a music track. This LCD also displays information like Caps Lock status, calculator, volume level, mute indicator, low battery warning, etc. The LCD is not really backlit, persé, but rather has a type of reflective property that shows up really well (if you have enough ambient light in the room).

I will not go on about every feature of this desktop combo. Most everyone will have already heard of (or used) the Logitech MX Revolution wireless laser mouse. The only change made to MX Revolution, from the original, is the change from 2.4GHz RF to Bluetooth. For a complete review of the new MX 5500 wireless keyboard/mouse combo, please look here:
http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1558,2252551,00.asp?kc=ETRSS02129TX1K0000532

As mentioned before, I have never been impressed by Logitech Bluetooth keyboard/mouse combos. In fact, I have not been impressed with Bluetooth technology as a whole. RF seems far more reliable and works at much greater distances. Bluetooth is OK for cell phone headsets but I have never thought of it as a sensible wireless technology for keyboards, mice, or anything else in my home. I am happy to say that Logitech has changed my mind, and has proven to me that this technology can work in a home or office setting. They now use Bluetooth 2.0 technology and claim a range of 30 feet. I have tested both the mouse and keyboard at a range of roughly 16 feet and they continue to work very well. My only complaints are as follows:

- Scrolling feature on mouse sometimes hesitates, but eventually smooths out.
- Caluculator button on keyboard uses keyboard LCD as a calculator, rather than bringing up the Windows calculator.
- Keyboard volume controls use LCD to display volume level, and the level indicated is not very accurate.
- No included USB extension cable and/or desktop Bluetooth receiver (they just give you a USB dongle).

Other than these small complaints, I am very happy with my new MX 5500 wireless keyboard/mouse combo. It appears that Logitech got it right this time. I am still not a big fan of Bluetooth technology, but the MX 5500 may potentially change my outlook altogether. One little thing to mention, the Bluetooth USB dongle that Logitech gives you should really not be plugged into the back of a PC, but rather out in front or preferably up on the desktop itself. I would suggest using a USB extension cable. Logitech should have included one with the MX 5500 kit. In fact, I am using the little USB cable and stand that Logitech included with the MX 3200 RF combo kit. Why they didn't include one of these with the MX 5500 is anybody's guess. So if you are considering the MX 5500 for youself, but have been holding back because of the troubled Bluetooth problems from previous models, I can honestly tell you that my experience has been wonderful and trouble free. At over $160, this combo is not for everyone. But if you have been waiting, as I have, for a wireless combo that includes the fabulous MX Revolution laser mouse, then order up the MX 5500 today and try it for yourself. I think Logitech has really done it right this time! =o)

77.) Great Setup With A Few Nuisances
Reviewed by: Chris L. Big Sky Country, Montana
Rating:
I have been using Logitech cordless mice for decades and their cordless desktops since pretty much the first one. Each Logitech set tends to be 'best of breed' in their time and the MX-5500 Revolution is definitely one of the best configurations currently on the market. I purchased this to use on a new system and was recently using the MX-5000 on my work and home computers so some of my comments will reflect comparisons to the MX-5000. Also, be aware that I am a self-proclaimed 'keyboard junkie' and use a ton of keyboard shortcuts to limit the time I go to the mouse so I can work a little faster so some comments may not apply as much if you are a heavy `mouser'. Simply put, I like the setup and even with some of the cons I note I think it is really nice and worth the money.

*** PROS ***

The display text is a little larger and a little better angle than the MX-5000 was. That said, less info shows on the display so you have to scroll between settings to see additional info. For example if you want to go from the temperature to see the time or the current track playing you have to press a button below the display to do so. I like the display though and think the increased visibility is a nice change from the MX-5000.

This was very easy to setup. The keyboard and mouse work just fine by doing nothing more than connecting the dongle to a USB port though you don't get some of the more advanced features without installing Set Point. As always, do not install the Set Point software that comes with the combo - go to the support link at www.logitech.com and download the latest version. Each version of Set Point has added features and stability over the previous versions which was very important with the MX-5000. I downloaded version 4.60 (shipped with 4.26) and it updated the Bluetooth dongle firmware without any interaction during the installation. I was not prompted for a reboot when the install completed and I found the keyboard a little flaky until I reboot the computer. After the reboot everything worked perfectly.

I love that Logitech got away from the touch system on the MX-5000 for media controls and used real keys. For volume, mute, track and play/pause it is much better to have 'real' keys instead of the touch variations on the MX-5000.

The entire system works very cleanly with almost no lag. This is a combination of the new bluetooth dongle and the enhancements in recent versions of Set Point. With a recent version of Set Point the MX-5000 had almost no lag, but it seems that the MX-5500 is even better.

This system is highly configurable. That said, you will see some issues in the CONS section with regards to configurability. Despite those issues, this is by far the most configurable combo setup from Logitech. I love changing the thumb scroll wheel to control volume (push is mute) and being able to change the main scroll wheel to click or fast spin per application is great. Even with the default setup this is nicely configured and I think most folks will really like the options.

The one touch search is a fairly nifty feature as well. Basically you highlight a word or phrase, aim the mouse at it and press the button below the scroll wheel to kick off an Internet search. It defaults to Yahoo search, but you can change it to Google, AOL or live pretty easily.

*** CONS ***

No power switch on the keyboard. Many of the previous cordless keyboards from Logitech included this feature. No matter how power efficient the keyboard is, it drains the battery faster turned on than if you shut it off at night, on weekends, etc. You can always remove the batteries, but that is not very realistic on a regular basis. Without a power switch the keyboard should `hibernate' or go into some other power saving mode after being unused for a period of time.

The power cable is permanently attached to the mouse cradle. The previous versions had a cable that plugged into the cradle which made running the wire through desks or around obstacles a little easier. I found it a bit annoying trying to run the power cord so it was fairly hidden as the wall plug was on one side and the cradle the other and neither part easily fit through the cable cutouts in the desk.

I have found that the keyboard is not responsive before booting into Windows. This can be an issue if you need to boot into safe mode, modify the BIOS, etc. If you get this set, make sure to keep an old wired keyboard handy just in case you ever need it. Actually, it is not a bad idea to keep an old corded keyboard and mouse with any wireless set as it seems that the batteries only go out when you don't have spares.

The Windows right-click button (AKA "App Menu") is missing and replaced with a Logitech FN key (this key is typically found between CTRL and ALT to the right of the space bar). You can access this feature by pressing the FN+PRINT SCREEN or SHIFT+F10. Multiple keys are definitely more hassle than it is worth for most keyboard junkies. It would be nice if the FN key could be remapped as a right-click key, but that is not possible per Logitech.

Using the main scroll wheel to scroll side to side is a bit tough. Many higher end mouses include the ability to `push' the wheel to scroll left and right. This works, but I have to move my hand around on the mouse to do it. Folks with different hand shapes may not have this issue and it is not the most commonly used mouse feature anyway. This is likely not a huge negative unless you just love doing this type of scrolling.

The sleep button above number pad can be a problem. While this button is more out of the way than many of their previous keyboards, it is still fairly easy to hit it if you do a lot of 10 key work. All it takes is one 'fat finger' moment and you have put the computer to sleep. For some less savvy computer users they will have a `what is happening' panic moment that could be fairly stressful even though they likely won't lose anything. It would be optimal if you could remap this key or disable the feature, but that is not possible currently.

The missing NUM LOCK key is just plain annoying. This has been discussed by a number of people so I will not harp on it here. The number pad is enabled by default and you do have arrows in the middle of the keyboard, but for gaming and some other applications is it nice to turn on the navigation keys on the number pad. Not a huge issue for me, but something to consider if this is a deal breaker for you.

There is no USB extension cable for the bluetooth dongle as came with previous versions. I often didn't use the USB extension cable, but it was handy for some desks where the monitor, keyboard and mouse are fairly distant from the actual computer. An extension cord is easily available and it may be just as easy to have a small USB hub for convenience if you really have connection issues. I was able to use the keyboard and mouse much further away from the dongle than with the MX-5000 so I don't think this will be much of an issue and the increased distance is likely why the cord is no longer included.

I miss the scroll up/down buttons above/below the scroll wheel in the MX-5000. That was pretty handy when scrolling through a large document. These buttons helped when reading something lengthy so I didn't burn out my index finger scrolling a lot. I think it would have been tough to include these buttons with the design of the Revolution mouse, so I can understand why they are no longer there but I still miss them.

The inability to change the one-click search to a different engine than Google, Yahoo, AOL or Live is a bummer. If you love a different search engine, this really restricts you. Since most folks probably use one of these engines it is likely not a huge issue. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a 'tweak' to change this, but geek tweaking is probably more hassle than it is worth for most.

*** LOVE IT OR HATE IT ***

Mouse scroll wheel switches between hyper spin and click spin. I have enjoyed this feature and it is great that you can configure it to click spin a little slower in a program like your browser, but do a faster free spin in programs like Word or Acrobat where you have a lot of info to scroll through. I can see this being something some folks may get annoyed with though.

The Revolution mouse is definitely a love it or hate it. It is a different feel and the scroll wheel where you thumb rests takes a little getting used to. I have grown to like the mouse, but you may want to stop by a local retailer that sells mouses or combo sets so you can be sure the feel works for you.

78.) Probably the best Bluetooth combo
Reviewed by: PSB Minnetonka, MN United States
Rating:
There aren't too many Bluetooth mice or keyboards. The current offerings tend to leave out the number pad. The Logitech diNovo Media Desktop Laser is the other Bluetooth option with a (separate) number pad, but it seems overpriced considering it's like 5 years old. The diNovo's low profile (laptop style) keyboard is nice, but this comes with a built in number pad and a better mouse.

The MX Revolution mouse is pretty awesome. Laser mice are definitely way more accurate. It is a full size mouse, which is good; "laptop" (portable) mice aren't very comfortable. It sounds weird, but the best part about the MX Revolution is the scroll wheel, which shifts between incremental and free-spinning modes depending on how fast you spin it. You can even adjust the speed at which the free-spin mode kicks in.

The keyboard is nothing special, but overall, it is good. I guess there aren't really any annoying features that get in the way, which is saying a lot. It is much lighter and quieter than my previous Logitech wireless keyboard.

The Bluetooth is great. I didn't have to use Logitech's USB dongle or Logitech's Bluetooth drivers. The Logitech configuration software works with my built-in Bluetooth, so all the "hot keys" and advanced mouse settings are available. I read that without the Logitech dongle the thermometer on the keyboard wouldn't work, but mine works anyway. There is one major limitation with Bluetooth - when the mouse or keyboard is sleeping, there is a delay of a couple of seconds before it starts to work again. (I never had this problem with my regular RF mouse and keyboard.) It takes a bit of getting used to, but it is definitely worth not having a receiver or tying-up a USB port.

The battery life is great. Keyboard battery life is never a problem and this is no exception. The laser mouse is very battery efficient. I rarely charge it (biweekly) and I never run out of battery, so you should get at least a few days of heavy use out of it, easily.

I really wish this set came with a Bluetooth version of the new Logitech diNovo Keyboard for Notebooks, which is extremely simple and compact. With the MX Revolution, that would be the perfect combo.

79.) Just a note: Still requires USB
Reviewed by: chuanha1

Note that contrary to what you might expect, this "wireless" device still requires a USB port for the docking station that recharges the mouse and provides the Bluetooth hub. In other words it isn't purely a Bluetooth device. Whether this matters to you just depends on what your needs are. If you are using a laptop with built in Bluetooth and just want a truly wireless keyboard and mouse, there are probably other options.

81.) Great Desktop Set, TERRIBLE Installation
Reviewed by: Tamayo Duck Lafayette, IN United States
Rating:
Background:
I'm running on WinXP Pro 64-bit. This keyboard and mouse worked right out of the box with the included Bluetooth hub. However, that was using Windows' native Bluetooth drivers, and not the specialized program Logitech provides that really gives this desktop set its customization power. This is where I ran into major problems (probably 6-8 hours total of troubleshooting before finally finding a solution).

Installation Woes:
I installed the latest Setpoint software for my OS, and immediately both mouse and keyboard completely stopped responding, and would not work till I had uninstalled Setpoint and rebooted a couple times. THIS IS NOT GOOD! On top of the actual hardware not responding, the Setpoint program itself was missing the Mouse and Keyboard tabs that give you the functionality Setpoint is made for. I tried many things - searching the Logitech forums, the product documentation, Google, installations on a clean boot, everything! I tried installing previous versions of Setpoint with the same bad results. Then I came across a tiny gem of a Logitech support article - people who were having problems getting Setpoint to display the Keyboard/Mouse tabs were told to try changing a particular driver file with a ".sys" file extension to a ".bak" file extension, and reinstall Setpoint.

...IT WORKED!!!! Keep in mind that this fix doesn't work for everyone having issues with Setpoint, but the fact that I had to do such a backdoor type of fix to get Setpoint to install correctly brings this desktop set down to 4 stars for me. I have a pretty good amount of technical experience, but for someone that doesn't, that fix might not have even been possible, resulting in a returned product and a bad experience with Logitech. So if you are prepared for the fact that this desktop set's software might not work out of the box and requires some troubleshooting, you will probably be happier.

Overall Impressions (Mouse):
After getting past the hurdle of installing the set, it has truly become my dream keyboard/mouse set. The mouse is of course the main reason I and a lot of people buy this set. The scroll wheel is unique to the pricier Logitech mice, since it's made of metal and has a two different scroll settings - free spinning and click-to-click(ratcheted spin). Setpoint provides functionality to customize all the settings on a per application basis. I'm used to a smooth-scroll action on Microsoft mice which is not ratcheted, but has a decent amount of resistance. The MX Revolution mouse has no such resistance... give it a quick flick and it will spin for several seconds. This takes some getting used to, so be warned. However, it is an amazing feature and I'm loving it so far. If you use Setpoint's option to enable the mouse to freely switch between the free spin setting and the click-to-click setting, the mouse will decide when you are trying to scroll quickly or slowly and will adjust. This is accompanied by a mechanical sounding click from inside the mouse when switching between modes - particularly when going from free spin to ratcheted.

I have XP, so the document flipper thumb switch doesn't work quite as elegantly for me as for Vista users. It does still work though, and it's quite convenient, though really it works exactly like Alt+Tab. The other mice buttons are all customizable too, and I've actually set my browser to recognize left and right scroll wheel motions as forward and backward in the browser. This is a function I pined for on my older Microsoft mouse, and I couldn't be happier. My one beef with this mouse is that it's rechargeable, meaning I can't remove the batteries and replace them. Battery life should be approximately 2 weeks per charge, and I'm planning on turning the mouse off at night to extend this.

Overall I am very thrilled with the mouse and I think you will be too. It's just SO customizable that anyone can make it work exactly as they wish.

Overall Impressions (Keyboard):
If you require a crisp, louder typing experience, this is probably not the keyboard for you. I've seen the typing experience described as "mushy" and "soft" and both terms describe it pretty well. However, the keyboard is quiet, the key response is great, and quite honestly, I find it a refreshing change from my extremely loud Desktop Elite keyboard, especially since I'm a particularly hard typist. As far as the customization of the keyboard, there are nearly as many options as there are for the mouse. All function + extra keys can be reassigned, and the LCD screen is an oddity, but not so bad. I'm still trying to figure out all the different buttons and how they work! I'm a little disappointed that the keyboard requires 4 AA batteries, but the battery charge counter in Setpoint claims that the batteries will last at least half a year, which I guess isn't so bad. I'd like an on/off switch on the board similar to the mouse, to lengthen this lifetime when I'm not using it. The positioning of the media keys is great but strangely enough none of these buttons are customizable. However, all functions work perfectly in Winamp 5.5, which is more than I got from my Desktop Elite, and they should work great in Windows Media Player or any other common media program. Setpoint also allows you to disable certain buttons you may never use and could hit accidentally, such as the Insert, ScrollLock, and CapsLock keys.

Here I'll address some of the common complaints about this keyboard in its layout, etc:
1. Calculator button - yes, the dedicated calculator button only uses the LCD, not the Windows Calculator. However, Setpoint provides functionality to assign the value to the system clipboard whenever you hit enter, which is adequate. Any one of the other buttons can be reassigned to use the Windows calculator anyway - I changed the Gadgets button, and there's no problems.

2. Lack of direction keys in the numeric keypad. Yes, this is true. I've never used the numeric keypad to do directions, so for me it's not an issue. However, if you do, look somewhere else. Because of this, there's no Numlock key, and good riddance!

3.LCD is not backlit. This is also true - the LCD is kind of strange since it's white text on a black background, by default. However, by hitting Fn+Insert, you can actually change the LCD to be black text on a lighter background. At this point I'm not sure which one would use more battery power, especially since this LCD screen never turns off, even when the computer is off. However, by changing this setting it makes the LCD screen to appear to be off center... as in, there's a pretty wide (1cm) black vertical band on the left side of the LCD, but only a very thin one on the right. The wider band on the left is meant to notify you of such things as new mail (blinking envelope), CapsLock being on, etc, but do not change to black on white like the rest of the LCD screen, which I find strange. I like the thermometer, key counter, and media options on the LCD screen.

4. Cannot use during boot time - NOT true. As long as you have updated your BIOS recently, you should be okay. I was able to use this BT keyboard to get into my BIOS settings, and my BIOS is about 6 months old. If using this keyboard during boot time is important to you, ensure that your BIOS is updated, and you should be okay.

Bluetooth Connectivity, etc:
I originally decided on getting a Bluetooth desktop set because my netbook has bluetooth, and I wanted a mouse that could work on both (obviously not at the same time, that's unnecessary). My desktop does not have integrated Bluetooth, so I'm using Logitech's supplied BT dongle. It's a good thing, too, because in the documentation, it says that Setpoint is only available for those using Logitech's BT dongle hub, and if you're using some other type, such as internal BT, you can't get the same customizability. I haven't specifically tested this yet, but that is a concern. However, I was able to pair up my netbook to this hub, so as long as you have Setpoint correctly configured you can use this BT hub for any of your devices, including cell phones and BT headsets.

No drops yet in connectivity, other than the odd times when I've booted up the computer before turning on the mouse. This was remedied by just turning on the mouse and hitting the BT connect button on the bottom of the mouse, and Setpoint recognized, paired, and I was using my mouse within 10 seconds. I've also tested this mouse with my EeePC 1000H and got them to pair together with minimal effort - using the native Windows Bluetooth stack, of course.

Bottom Line:
If you're looking for a desktop set that has a HUGE amount of customizability, and you do not currently have Bluetooth capability in your computer, I recommend this set! I'm afraid that without the Logitech hub as your Bluetooth source, you may not be able to get your money's worth from this set. However, for those who are willing to spend a little time customizing and playing with all the possible settings for this combo set, you will be well rewarded... as long as you can get through installation. ;) Happy typing and mousing!

I just recently purchased the MX5500 due to my keyboard (a PS/2 connection) having issues with the keys (certain buttons need to be tapped hard to register) and my rechargeable batteries not being able to hold a charge anymore (I had a Logitech wireless mouse)

This is a great product for everything that I did except for gaming. I tried it on World of Warcraft and Sims 2 (just to verify). Both keyboard and mouse would lag. In Wow, it would take a few seconds to see that I pressed the up (move forward) button, or it wouldn't notice the I let go of it (which caused me at one time to run over the cliff to my death). As for the mouse, trying to click on the action that you wanted would take a few or more seconds. It also has issues doing things together, like holding the shift and right-clicking on the mouse, it wouldn't even notice it, even after trying it a few times.

What's funny is that I also have another MX Revolution mouse (which is now connected to my laptop) and it worked well with my old keyboard. The only other difference I noticed between the two mouses was the MX5500 one has a "connect" button on the underside.

4. Best For advance user or advance gamer.
5. It bluetooth can be use has bluetooth hub.
6. Very easy to update the firmware (and it a must thing to do too, cuz if the firmware came from the factory is really unstable).

Cons:
1. It came with the worst user manual ever made in man kind history. I mean with this combo there a thousand function but the manual only tell you how to use about 1% of it.
2. Some of the rarely use key function been remove; ie numlock, scolllock. But you can use the software to achieve those function.
3. Mouse has a build-in battery so you can't replace the battery if its degenerate. And for me, charging mouse every week or so is too often.
4.Not meant for beginer user, due to the lack of manual instruction.

Other Thoughts:
This combo is probably the greatest key&mice combo every made but like everything in this world, it doesn't came perfect from the factory. You have to costomize it to you needs.
This combo is not recommend for user who doesn't like thing to be complicate. I mean this combo is highly customizable and if you use the factory setting is really going to be suck one. For example: people who complain about range, response, connectivity; Have you try changing the bluetooth mode. I use a 46" LCD TV, imagine how far must I be sitting when I using it and I have complete crysis wh, Call of duty4-5, Red Alert3 using this combo.

PS: I already review this item on newegg.com, so when amazon ask me to review this product. I simply just copy and past what I wrote for newegg, ironically I brought this product from amazon.com though and their amazon prime membership delivery this item really fast.

Wireless is great.

The keyboard has nice shortcut features to folders & applications and I find the clock / date on the little LCD screen to be convenient. The LCD screen has other functions as well. I'm not too crazy about the feel of the keys. They're a bit "mushy" and I prefer a more positive, tactile feel.

The mouse is very nice. It has a couple shortcut buttons and I'm getting used to the scroll wheel. It does spin a web page up / down quickly. For internet scrolling you don't feel the "bumps" as you roll the wheel, but it freewheels and that's great for spinning but not so great for controlling the movement of a page more slowly. It does not seem to work as predictably when scrolling slowly through a web page but the thing knows whether you're viewing a browser or, for example an M/S Office application and there you do feel the "bumps" and you have the same controll as a conventional mouse's scroll wheel. I'm not really complaining but it is different for web pages. The rechargable battery holds up for quite a few days before the light on the mouse indicates you need to put it back in the cradel for re-charging.

I think it is on the expensive side, but you can expect to pay more for anything with more features. I'll be unhappy if I don't get quite a few year's use out of it.

It would draw too much power with backlit keys and batteries really wouldn't last long. I was using this keyboard+mouse combo for 6 months on a Windows PC until I started using it on my new Mac Mini. The keyboard was great on Windows. Typing was quiet, but there was a good muffled click to the keys. The keyboard smart keys/shortcuts worked great and while I wish there was a little more flexibility in some of the customization, I got over it quickly. It is also light, but felt sturdy. Basically, good quality construction. The many buttons on the mouse are great. My only wish is that they add the ability to control click with one button. My old MS Intellimouse has this ability, so there's no reason this fairly new and very expensive laser mouse shouldn't. While the buttons were great on the mouse, the tracking at slow speeds isn't that great. I blame it on the acceleration curve that the software uses. Windows XP's mouse control panel can override Logitech's, but it can be glitchy when Windows get confused on which program dominates. I never experienced any dropped connections, though.

Onto my Mac Mini. Like the other reviewer mentioned, it is very difficult to get Logitech's software to work. When it did, the mouse and keyboard shows up as lower end versions, so you can't customize most of the buttons you paid for. Since going with Logitech's software is so cumbersome and very pointless, I tried using the built in Bluetooth on my Mac Mini and it works fine. I'm actually writing this review with this MX combo on my Mac. Logitech never said this combo is designed for OS X, so I won't hold it against them. This is just a warning for those looking for using this with OS X.

I purchased this keyboard/mouse combo for use with an Intel iMac running 10.5 (Leopard) with integrated Bluetooth. It paired instantly and with no difficulty using the operating system's integrated Bluetooth setup tools and has consistently maintained an uninterrupted connection for the last three weeks or so. The keyboard and mouse will go into a sleep mode when not in use so I haven't had to charge the mouse up once since I got it, but admittedly I don't use my computer more than an hour or two per day on average.

On the plus side, some of the buttons which I was not expecting to work do, such as the F1 - F12 buttons and one of the side buttons on the mouse (it moves all windows to the side to show the desktop). The volume buttons on the left side of the keyboard work as well.

On the downside, some of the advanced features do not work which I expected. This includes configuring the LCD display and some of the other buttons (i.e. clicking the scroll wheel will not open Dashboard the way it does on Apple's mouse). The configuration software that comes with the keyboard is for Windows only so I cannot attempt to do any advanced configuration or programming of other keys. I expected this for the most part so this wasn't upsetting.

What is a little disappointing, and what kept me from giving the keyboard 5 out of 5 stars is the number keypad doesn't work in all cases. For instance, I cannot rename files in the Finder using the number keypad; I have to use the ones on the main keyboard. Even when the number keypad does work (which is actually most of the time), the computer will play the alert noise when I press the buttons (when filling out a form on the Web for instance). I presume it does this because it doesn't fully recognize the keys. This is slightly annoying but I overlook it since I am at least still able to use the number keypad most of the time.

Overall, I would recommend this keyboard/mouse for use with a Macintosh.

109.) Not a real upgrade from the MX5000
Reviewed by: G. Ifland Castle Rock, CO USA
Rating:
I have been using Logitech products for many years and have always found them to be of the highest quality and innovation. However, I was somewhat disappointed with MX5500 Desktop. I base this on a direct comparison with the MX5000 Desktop which this product is designed to replace.

The Keyboard: The MX5500 keyboard doesn't really improve on the MX5000 keyboard. The display is smaller and you have to scroll to access some features that are included in the main MX5000 display. The section of the MX5500 that contains the display is raised higher than the MX5000 which makes the keyboard taller. In my case, with the legs extended, the top of the keyboard rubbed against the bottom of my desktop. (My desk has a slide out keyboard platform. I would expect folks with similar arangements or who use keyboard drawers to have the same problem.) In general, the MX5500 keyboard feels lighter and less substantial than the MX5000. I think the silver/blue and black colors of the MX5000 make for a "classier" appearance. I also prefer the detachable wrist rest on the MX5000 (a concern if space is a consideration.) In a nod to the MX5500, I do not miss the touch sentitive keys for Zoom and Volume control on the MX5000.

The Mouse: I absolutely love the scroll wheel on the MX Revolution Mouse! That said, I much prefer the shape of the MX1000 Laser mouse that comes with the MX5000 Desktop. For me, it just feels more comfortable and is less fatiguing to use over extended periods. With the exception of the scroll wheel operation and search button on the MX Revolution, the mice are functionally identical. Additionally, the time between charges is longer with the MX1000 Laser mouse.

The Bluetooth Connection: Much has been written about the issues (drop outs, mouse lag) with the Bluetooth connection on the MX5000 Desktop. These have been corrected with firmware updates and the later releases of the Setpoint software. I fould no such issues with the MX5500 and consider the two equal in this area. Both units use the same BT 2.0 dongle.

In Summary: The MX5500 is a good product. I just don't see it as an advance over the MX5000. I would recommend purchasing the MX5000 while you can - it is less expensive (plus a $40 rebate!), does just about everything the MX5500 does and has a better display. In my case, I returned the MX5500 and ordered another MX5000 to have in case the one I am using breaks (and before they are no longer available). Of course, all opinions are subjective - your mileage may vary.

This is my third week for using Logitech Cordless Desktop MX5500 Revolution after using the Logitech diNovo Keyboard combo for 3 years. I am impressed how comfortable using the MX5500 keyboard compares to diNovo's. Thin and flat design diNovo keyboard is very stylish, cool and portable but not really practical feeling for daily business use. My decision for purchasing MX5500 combo over Wave set is because I like the idea of little display attached with built-in calculator and did not like the idea of Wave combo comes with compromised mouse. I gave 3 stars for this review in spite of my satisfaction of purchasing this MX5500 combo. The reason 1) is the built-in calculator Logitech named Smart Calculator does not support a Memory +, Memory - function keys on it. I am still believing I should be able to assign those memory functions on somewhere on the keyboard otherwise I will be so disappointed with Logitech who named such simple calculator as "Smart Calculator". So now, I must back to my $6.99 Staple's calculator over this $150 gadget. The reason 2) is I am not really satisfied with a scroll feeling of mouse wheel. Good thing about this mouse is I can switch from rapid scrolling to click-to-click by pressing down the wheel. This is not something I've had on my previous Logitech mouse but somehow the click-to-click wheel feeling is too loose and I see some windows jump up and down before it completely stops when I quickly toss the wheel with finger. This setting should be little stiffer and stable. Otherwise bluetooth connection is very simple and easy and Logitech is always a leading manufacturer of innovative products I can go along with.

112.) Not for Mac's

I have a Mac Mini with an Intel Core 2 Duo. I regularly switch between the Mac OS and Windows XP using Parallels Desktop. For this reason I prefer Windows rather than Mac keyboards. In the past I've used Logitech mice and have liked every one. At this point I wanted a cordless keyboard and mouse, so I turned to Logitech and decided to try the MX 5500 because I wanted to try Bluetooth and my prior experience with an MX mouse was excellent.

Logitech makes it clear at their web site that they don't recommend using this product for Mac. However, they don't support the Wave Pro for Mac, either, but if you read the comments here on Amazon there are many Mac user who find the Wave Pro works fine for them. Therefore, I decided to try this in spite of the lack of Logitech support.

The basic keyboard and mouse functions worked fine right out of the box. Because of this I can say this is a very high quality product, and for that reason I spent many hours trying to make the added features work on either or both the Mac and Windows OS on this Mac Duo. I failed. I downloaded the latest software for Mac and Windows from the Logitech site. I sent an e-mail to their support group; this was not very helpful. Finally I called their support group; this was VERY helpful. In the end, however, I had to send the product back.

A few of the special function keys work. It is possible to turn iTunes off/on and change the volume from the keyboard. The keyboard calculator works on both operating systems (i.e. calculations are visible in the LCD), but the keyboard was usable to enter numbers into Word or Excel documents only on the Mac side, not Windows. Only the right and left click and the scroll wheel worked on the mouse. The only other LCD function that worked was the temperature (always in centigrade). None of the other function buttons, such as insert, print screen, etc. seem to work.

Neither the LCC on Mac (with Windows completely turned off) or the Setpoint on Windows would recognize the keyboard or the mouse. I could connect using Bluetooth (e.g. everything showed up in System Profile) but neither keyboard or mouse showed up in the LCC and Setpoint. For this reason it was not possible to program or use the F buttons in any way.

In summary, I think this is probably an excellent product for Windows running on a PC, but it didn't meet my needs at the most rudimentary level for Mac alone or for Windows running on a Mac Intel Core 2 Duo.

I've been a fan of Logitech's hardware products (especially wireless mice) for awhile now. When it came time to build a new gaming PC I decided to go with the MX 5500 Revolution keyboard-and-mouse set. The mouse works flawlessly. The keyboard, on the other hand, gives me some trouble. While it feels nice to use, the reconfigured Home, End, Delete, PgUp, and PgDn keys take some getting used to. The LCD screen is a mostly useless function, as most of what it does can already be done on the computer you've connected it to (e.g. new mail notification, calculator, currently playing song info, etc.). The media playback buttons are a nice feature, as are the customizable shortcut keys. My biggest problem with the keyboard is that it CONSTANTLY disconnects from the computer. The keyboard and mouse both connect to a proprietary USB Bluetooth dongle. My mouse always stays connected and is incredibly responsive. The keyboard, however, disconnects and only reconnects after several seconds of key-pressing. Usually when I am typing at a quick pace, the keyboard stays connected, but if I stop for a second or more there is a chance the keyboard will disconnect (and the longer I stop, the greater the chance of disconnection). Resetting and re-pairing the keyboard has not helped the situation, nor has swapping the batteries, or reinstalling the included Logitech software (I have never been a fan of Logitech configuration software, but it generally gets the job done). It is possible that this is a defect in my specific keyboard, but it didn't start out this way. It actually began disconnecting from my PC a few months after I began using it. Since the keyboard is connected to a gaming PC, this problem can be a big issue. While not so much a problem with shooters (where at least one key is almost always being pressed), it becomes annoying in strategy games or other mouse-heavy genres where keyboard control is not constant. Sometimes the problem can get you killed if it pops up during a multiplayer match.

Overall, the MX 5500 Revolution is a nice set. The mouse is great (although it has many buttons that games/programs cannot recognize as individual buttons--not a terrible problem to have), and perhaps others have had better luck with the keyboard. As it stands, my luck has not been so hot. I'll keep the mouse, but I'm going to dig out a USB gaming keyboard I've got lying around for future gaming use.

115.) Very serious limitations and much frustration
Reviewed by: Dennis Rosebrough Atlanta, GA
Rating:
Sorry in advance for the book, but seeing as how this product is amazingly overrated in my opinion, I feel like I need to expound in great detail and with concrete examples of why I am rating a product that so many others seem to love so lowly. I urge you to consider the following points very carefully and diligently try to use this keyboard in person before (literally) buying into the feature hype. On paper it sounds cool, but I have been sorely disappointed with it.

I rate this keyboard/mouse combo two stars instead of one because for general use, it will do, and one specific feature (the scroll flywheel) is genuinely clever. However, it has some significant limitations that detract significantly from its usefulness; limitations that for this price, there really is no excuse for. Feel free to read on as far as you can tolerate for my issues with it, roughly in order of importance to me.

First of all, maybe I was just spoiled from the G15 keyboard I used to use, but the LCD is not backlit. This, combined with the discernible distance between the LCD pixels, makes it difficult to read except in well-lit conditions at a somewhat optimal viewing angle. Even under these conditions, almost everything in non-large letters is difficult to read and requires a conscious effort to do so. It would have been nice to at least have a button that would back-light the LCD for a few seconds.

Tiny little function keys annoy me. On this keyboard, not only are they tiny, but they are low-profile compared to other keys and scrunched closely together and in odd groupings. There is also no separation between the keys, so if you're touch typing or gaming, it's extremely impractical to be able to tell where one ends and the next one starts. No matter how proficient you are at using a keyboard, you must resign yourself to having to hunt-and-peck for the function keys even after months of usage.

Look carefully above the number keypad. Notice that little calculator button in the top right? Normally, a calculator button launches the calculator utility on whatever operating system (OS) you happen to be using. However, on this keyboard, it does not. Instead, it puts the number keypad and LCD into a special "calculator" mode with no interaction with the OS at all. There are several problems with this "feature," and it just wasn't thought out by Logitech. For one thing, I *like* my OS's calculators. The keyboard calculator function doesn't include a memory or scientific functions (forget exponents, square roots, easy access to pi, etc.). It is actually less functional than simple small pocket calculators that banks and insurance salesmen give out for free, and you're stuck using the aforementioned hard-to-read LCD to see your results. For another, Logitech's answer to not having a memory function is that you can configure the software to copy answers to the OS's clipboard when you press the number keypad enter key. However, this is the ONLY OS interaction you get. You can't paste numbers into the keyboard's calculator, and you sure as heck can't run multiple instances of the calculator.

You cannot disable or reassign the calculator button on the keyboard. Logitech simply doesn't give you a choice of what you want it to do, and if you accidentally hit it, it throws your number keypad into its weird calculator mode. Speaking of which, it IS a weird calculator mode. When in calc mode, ONLY the number keypad works to enter numbers. (The number keys over the letters do not.) ONLY the Enter key on the number keypad performs calculations. (The Enter key above the right Shift doesn't.) This is honestly the most boneheaded design for a calculator I've seen.

Speaking of boneheaded keys, look closely at the little button to the right of the calculator button. It's a "sleep" button. It's VERY easy to hit this button by accident, it's even lower-profile than the other buttons, so barely brushing it presses it. And of course, the default action of the button is to immediately put your computer into "sleep" mode with no confirmation or warning. The first time this happened, I was staring wide-eyed (and wide-mouthed) at my monitor wondering, "What the [bleep!] is going on?" This little exercise in frustration will cause you many minutes of wasted time until you get everything started back up again. If you do end up with one of these keyboards, one of the first things you should do is to go into the software and change that button's functionality to "Do Nothing."

Speaking of software, the included SetPoint software positively stinks. The actions to perform for hitting a button are EXTREMELY limited, you can only pick from one of a few things. For example, if you want to reprogram that "sleep" button, you only have five options: Sleep, Restart, Shutdown, Log off, and Do Nothing. You can't launch a custom program, you can't run a script or macro, or anything else. Logitech as decided in its infinite wisdom that because there's a picture of an on/off logo on the button, those are the ONLY things you would ever possibly want to do with it. Do you want to transpose the F4 (calendar) and F6 (messenger) buttons because you like it better that way? Too bad. Also some keys (see calculator button) can't be programmed at all. The "Favorites" keys (of which there are only four) can only be programmed to launch applications, and only in a very bizarre manner (launch the application, hold down the favorite key for 2-3 seconds) that doesn't allow running an app with command-line parameters and imposing various other extreme restrictions.

And speaking of keys that can't be programmed, see that "Clear Calc" key that is where the Num Lock key is on most other keyboards? That is a key designed specifically for this keyboard's calculator function and, when not in use, is hardwired to function as a backspace. Instead of having it function as the Num Lock when not in calculator mode, or even have it optionally programmable to perform the Num Lock function, it is yet another dead key to me, destined to never be pressed. Like the calculator button, it is NOT programmable in SetPoint. This has the added mind-boggling inconvenince that there is NO Num Lock key. No, I'm not kidding. There is no way to access non-Num Lock functionality, so if you're one of the unfortunate who use the number keypad as your cursor keypad, delete key, etc., you're just out of luck. (Tip: This is NOT documented anywhere, but I found out that if you hold down shift, you can access the non-Num Lock functionality of the number keypad. However, there's no way to lock this functionality, so I hope you don't mind holding down Shift a lot.)

Also, this might not be important to you, but it most certainly is to me. SetPoint is Windows-only software. This means that if you use Linux or MacOS or anything else, you are destined to have issues. You cannot program ANY of the buttons. Because SetPoint is used to initialize the clock, if you try to use this keyboard with, for example, a Mac, the LCD will forever be stuck with the text "NO CONNECTION" / "NO TIME & DATE" on it. Also, though I haven't personally verified this, I've read reports that it does not process the "I'm shutting down" Bluetooth signal from other OSes. As a result, the Bluetooth radio on the keyboard stays on 24x7, causing the batteries to burn out in a few days or a couple of weeks instead of the months it normally is supposed to. In short, this is pretty much a Windows-only keyboard.

Among other things, I like to play video games. If you do too, you need to be aware that this keyboard has serious "chording" issues. For those not familiar with the term, many games have game functions such as moving, jumping, shooting, and so on mapped to specific keyboard keys. For example, the W key might move a character forward, and Alt-F3 might switch weapons. In normal, non-gaming use, one might never encounter a reason to press both W and Alt-F3 at the same time, so many keyboard manufacturers lower production costs by mapping multiple keys to various circuits so that it's impossible to pass the fact that three keys such as those are being pressed to the underlying operating system. This is a keyboard such as that. I've encountered several key combinations in games that just plain don't work. If you're a gamer, DO NOT buy this keyboard, as it is HIGHLY likely that you will have moderate to serious issues playing!

I haven't mentioned the mouse very much so far. I will start by saying that I do like the flywheel feature that you can use to spin the wheel freely. Once you get used to it, it makes scrolling through long documents considerably easier. However, the button-lock functionality is a bit wonky. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It's not a big deal, but they need to engineer it a bit better. Also...

The "search" button is just plain silly. It is located in an extraordinarily inconvenient place, just under the wheel, where it is very easy to hit accidentally. And when it is, whatever window you were working in immediately loses focus and a browser window pops up to whatever search engine you've selected (Yahoo as default). Very irritating! This is likely the second button you will quickly map to "do nothing" in SetPoint.

The "Document Flip" wheel on the side borders on misrepresented. Please be aware: It is NOT a wheel! It is what electricians call a 3-state rocker switch. You can push it forward and back, but it doesn't rotate. The Document Flip functionality is another thing that is extremely irritating. I would have expected it to use the familiar Alt-Tab interface to move back and forth through applications. Instead, it steals the focus from whatever window you're in, pops up its own proprietary window, not-so-helpfully moves your mouse cursor to its own window, and won't go away until you pick something, click the X in the corner, or hit escape. Also, again, SetPoint highly limits your actions for the Document Flipper. I think it might be useful to switch tabs in my browser, for instance, or switch among open application windows for apps such as Word or Excel. But of course, those just plain aren't options. Even more curious, there's not even a "do nothing" option to disable the Document Flipper! (Hint: Select Multiple Keystrokes and simply don't assign any keystrokes to it.)

Also, while the mouse is comfortable enough, the "wing" design has a serious drawback. If you need to move the mouse further than the limits of your mousepad, it's likely that you automatically pick it up and move it to the other side of the mouse pad to keep moving it over. Since I use big monitors, this is a rote action that I don't even think about. Well, DIDN'T think about. Because of the "wing" design and odd placement of the optical sensor, it's almost like the mouse is super-sensitive. I now have to make a deliberate effort to pick the mouse up at least a half inch or so off the mousepad to relocate it, or else when I move it over to the other side, my cursor "jerks" as if it is still on the mousepad. This problem is exacerbated by mouse acceleration. Sometimes the action of picking my mouse up to move the cursor one more inch to the right causes my cursor to fly to the left edge of the screen when I try to reorient it on my mousepad.

While not a complaint, for the price that Logitech is charging for this mouse, it would have been nice to have a removeable battery with a replacement included to avoid ever running out of charge. They did this with their G7 mouse and it was a great idea. However, with this one, no juice, no use until you put it in the charging unit and wait a while for it to recharge.

My last complaint about this product is really more towards the company, even the industry, as a whole. I suppose one might chalk it up to "personal preference," but it is extremely annoying. As you can see from the picture of this keyboard, they have a non-standard layout of the home, end, insert, delete, page up, and page down keys. Unfortunately, it seems that the new standard is to be non-standard, with different manufacturers having different layouts that they've decided is optimum. Even more puzzling, Logitech themselves have different standards for different keyboards! (Compare this keyboard's layout with: the G15, the Classic Keyboard 200, and the diNovo Keyboard for Notebooks. Four different keyboards, four different layouts.)

Well, I'm sorry but in my opinion, throwing away a standard that has been around since 1986 was really boneheaded. I'm not saying that companies should never try different layouts, but now, it is getting extremely hard to find a keyboard based on the keyboard layout that has been the de facto standard over 20 years. If a company decides to tinker with the layout, I expect them to keep offering the de facto standard on keyboards other than non-gaming keyboards, I expect them to at least be consistent with themselves across different lines, and I would hope that they would try to eventually come to some kind of consensus with other manufacturers. Very disappointing!

Until very recently, I've always liked Logitech keyboards. They produced top-notch, quality products and invented many clever features that made all keyboards and mice better. However, I really think that Logitech is now getting too clever for its own good, adding features that detract from their products in irritation and frustration. I do hope that they return to a "simpler is better" philosophy for at least a few product lines. To be fair, Microsoft (their main competitor) is making many of the very same mistakes, and if they continue down this path, it won't be long before a third party comes along and takes over market share. Until they either learn from their mistakes or something better comes along, I would suggest saving your money and frustration and going with a much less expensive, much more standard solution, or if you can live with a cord, going with one of their gaming keyboards even if you're not a gamer. I've had this product for a few months now, hoping that eventually I'll get used to it, but I just haven't.

I purchased this item in the hopes I would no longer need a usb extension cable to bring my mouse/keyboard receiver close enough to me to get a signal. While the range on this item is great ( i could use the keyboard mouse from 20+ feet away ) I could not bring myself to keep such an expensive wireless combo when I was not happy with the mouse performance.
Regardless of how the settings were tweaked for mouse speed/sensitivity etc, the pointer would move around what I was tring to select in both games and with general internet use, making it fustrating to use the mouse for any extended period of time. Within a half hour of using the mouse and trying to find a setting that would suffice, I gave up and went back to my old mx 700 logitech mouse. In light of the poor performance of the mouse I'm returning the whole thing.
The keyboard overall is a very sleek well performing device. The only negative as other people have noted is poor lighting on the lcd panel negates the convenience of it (the lcd panel ) almost entirely.

Purchased 2 units within 2 weeks - now wish I had moved more slowly.

First unit paired with an XPS 410 running XP dropping the keyboard every few days. Tech support finally said to remove SetPoint software to resolve OS conflicts. This strips away the ability to use the advanced capabilities. He said yeah - but it will work like a regular board now. Not sure that is what I was looking for.

Second unit paired with an XPS 420 running Vista. Bluetooth stack hangs on installation - tech support solution is to disable Bluetooth capability. Now it is dropping the mouse from time to time.

Inability to work with white bread OS and machines leaves me asking what the optimal pairing is. Apart from these problems this is a very satisfying combo when it works.

I received the keyboard and mouse in fine shape. It looks really nice and the keys feel pretty good. Now the problem, the bluetooth linked right up and worked fine, however, the LCD screen would not get data from the computer. It ia a useless feature. I searched support blogs and many people have had this problem. It is not a driver issue. I installed the latest drivers fron the website.

The mouse: The scroll wheel has a soft ratcheting feel, That's OK. It's just that sometimes it ratchets and sometimes it free-wheels. It still works but there is obviously something wrong.

Now when you buy a keyboard and mouse set and find a problem with BOTH the keyboard AND the mouse, this is a big problem. The support blogs show that at least the LCD screen problem has been going on for quite some time and the tech support answer is always "RMA the keyboard for a replacement." I HATE THAT! Gotta ship it back, wait forever for the replacement......you know the drill.

The quality control on this rig is awful. I'm a big Logitech fan and have a lot of their equipment but I have to advise caution when buying this one. It's very expensive and it might not work properly when you get it.

I am the IT person for my company. We are a large company that supports over 100 laptops. Out of 5 of these Logitech keyboard/mouse combos that we have purchased in the past three months, only 2 have installed and worked satisfactorily.

We are using them on Dell laptops that have built in Bluetooth. Been running into endless problems with device just not being recognized, keyboard having to be constantly re-connected to the pc, security codes having to be rentered.

Logitech support is less then helpful. As soon as you tell them that you are using the built-in bluetooth on your laptop and not the dongle that they supply, it's immediately an "out" for the Logitech support person to wash their hands of the problem. "You need to use it with our supplied bluetooth external chip"--end of conversation. To which I reply that Bluetooth is a universal standard and should work with ANY chip--internal or external. And if you have a laptop there is nothing more vulnerable then that external bluetooth dongle hanging out of a USB port all exposed.

I recommend getting the Dell Bluetooth keyboard and mouse combo (Dell item #310-7990). Not only are these cheaper at $89 but my department has setup 10 of them and they work like a charm!

I, like many others, suffer from regular and frequent disconnects. Logitech's only help is to use the latest software and to uninstall/reinstall. Duh. This advise is no help at all. I don't recommend the MX 5500. Too many people have the same problem. Your chances of suffering numerous disconnects is to great. Avoid this and choose a different setup. It isn't worth the hassle. I purchased a Logitech Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse. The mouse came with its own docking station and internal rechargable battery, the keyboard was suppose to respond from the Logitech Mini Receiver that plugs into a USB port. I paid approximately $170 for this combo set. The keyboard lasted about 6 months before it started losing the signal and would not respond, no matter how many times I replace the batteries, it just quit working. I put it to one side (in the trash) afer repeated discounts. The mouse continued to work for about 2 yrs but I would have to re-calibrate it approximately every week. The point would go all over the screen out of control, like a mad mouse or drunk mouse, another quality product produced and sold to the public with no support and no real warranty.

One other warning, like an idiot I purchased a Harimony remote, another Logitech quality product, cost $150.00. It worked great for 3 months, now it mal functions just like the keyboard. Does anyone know how I can contact and file a complaint to an agency that will do something about Logitech crappie products?

I bought the MX 5500 revolution from amazon on Nov 2008 and i really liked it. originally i planned on giving this 5 stars but a couple of days ago i tried to charge my mouse using the included base charger. The mouse unfortunately did not want to charge no matter how many times i tried, with the mouse ON or OFF it didn't matter. there's a battery charge indicator on the mouse and when it's charging the 3 battery bars go up then clears and the bars go up again until the battery is finally charged. Well my charge indicator on the mouse kept blinking red indicating an error which by no means is normal.
Here's a link that shows you the exact problem that i was having:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owZ7cJIA57I

The mouse uses a built in rechargeable battery so unfortunately there is no way of replacing the battery and if this happens to you there's no way of charging it after the battery dies. so you either replace the item or try to fix it.
Here's a link that shows you the problem and solution:

http://www.cooperbills.com/Projects/MXRevolution/

Now as you can see this not something that MOST of us would even want to do if our product is still on warranty. we would just send it back and get a replacement.
But the warranty doesn't cover us for too long and eventually if it happens you're either stuck with a dead mouse or you try the fix.
but no matter how great a product is we as consumers should not have to put up with this problem and we should therefor judge it accordingly. 1 Star!

I will say it has many nice features, was easy to install, and worked very well. One can tell by the touch that it is a very high quality keyboard.

I don't understand adding so many new wonderful features, and at the same time deleting a key that is an absolute must for some users.

Mouse is somewhat comfortable to use, and it is not too heavy. Its battery lasts for about a week under normal use, when fully charged, and not the 14 days that its application indicates. The recharger base is a nice thing to have, and can charge the mouse in a few hours. But, it would have been nice if it was designed in such a way that it was easy to use. Whoever designed the charger's base must have been on something very strong. Good luck trying to get the mouse to line up on the charger.
Mouse's pointer is not 100% accurate, and sometimes it takes a bit of back-and-forth moving to position the pointer on a small icon or object. Free-spin does not work well at all, and it does roll back most of the times. Sometimes, I have to manually set it to Click-to-Click so that it stops rolling the opposite direction. It automatically switches between Free-Spin and Click-to-Click, when it is setup to do so, but I cannot tell what makes it switch between the two options. Sometimes it seems like it just switches as soon as you touch the mouse, and without even touching the wheel. It seems like that the Free-Spin function does not work right.
The keyboard is already in the trash after about 4 months of using it. It was just not usable, and the feel of it was terrible. I had to get rid of it. I just could not type on it. It drove me crazy enough that I just finally got mad and throw it away.
So, overall do not waste you money on this set. It really is not worth the money, and even if you buy it cheap, it does not work well. The biggest problem is its bad design. They should have tried to keep it simple, and normal. When a keyboard does not feel and look like a keyboard, then it is not a keyboard.

I could not get this device to work at all. I dont know why they are moving away from rf and into bluetooth. Bluetooth does me no good because my wifi router is beefed up to 400ma output which means the bluetooth has no chance of working properly on the 2.4ghz range. My router is about 3 feet from my main pc and it is connected by ethernet cable my other pcs and my xbox360 connect to it wirelessly. My dads office is about 200 feet from my house and he piggy backs my connection wirelessly. I have a router that has a range of about 1/2 mile and with this kind of output power the little bluetooth dongle piece of junk has no chance. The makers claim that the bluetooth will search for a clear channel then use the clear channel but the problem with that is there are no clear channels my wifi router is pushing a lot of power on every channel. Bluetooth = GARBAGE. I have not been able to find a valid reason for bluetooth other than a headset for your cellphone which makes you look like a moron walking around talking to yourself.
